GENDER EQUALITY IS ACHIEVABLE GOAL THAT IS NO LONGER QUESTIONED IN SERBIA

„Gender equality is an achievable goal, but also an obligation we owe to women, who are a pillar of society, the state and our European future. As a society, we have sent the strongest possible message, because we have a government headed by a woman and in which almost half of the ministers are women“, said today Lady Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government, Marija Obradović.

At the gathering “Social Dialogue – the State of Gender Equality in the Republic of Serbia”, she pointed out that gender equality in Serbia must be even more visible, strengthened with the participation of both sexes in all spheres of public and private life, and added that this gathering is another proof that in Serbia we are strengthening a system of gender equality that is no longer questionable.

Lady Minister of MPALSG pointed out, that at the local level today we have 20 women leading towns and municipalities, 29 women are at the head of city and municipal assemblies, and 73 women are holding the position of Heads of City and Municipal Administrations. All this is a way to hear the voice of women in places where decisions are made in the society, however, women manage those areas and are in those places where it is most difficult in Serbia today, and therefore, although we have laws guaranteeing equality and prohibiting discrimination, there are challenges that need to be overcome on a daily basis, said Lady Minister Obradović.

Today’s gathering was organized by the Ministry of Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue in cooperation with the Coordination Body for Gender Equality of the Government of the Republic of Serbia.
