MARTINOVIĆ: PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION NEEDS EDUCATED YOUNG PROFESSIONALS

The Student Professional Practice in Public Administration Fair for 2022/2023, at which 56 public administration bodies offer internships for almost 800 students from five state universities in Serbia, was opened today on a specially designed digital platform, in the virtual space of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia.

The Fair was officially opened by the Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government, Aleksandar Martinović, PhD, who expressed his hope that this fair would be as successful as the one held last year, which had attracted great interest of the academic community, primarily of students for whom it is intended, but also of public administration bodies.

“Public administration needs educated young professionals who would introduce new ideas, energy, enthusiasm and creativity and who, in synergy with all of us who are dedicated to work in public administration, can contribute to even greater and faster reform processes and results that are visible in various segments of our society and the state in general”, Martinović has said.

He added that last year’s Fair was also recognized as an inclusive and innovative initiative for the empowerment and employment of young people by relevant institutions outside of Serbia, which can be applied in the administrations of other countries; the special award of the Regional School of Public Administration (ReSPA) and OECD/SIGMA, which was handed over to the Ministry in September 2022, is a testament to this.

“We are making progress in respect of this process, and we believe that the Government’s responsible policy towards young people and the efforts of the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government, as well as of other authorities which participate with us in this important work, shall, in the long run, create the conditions for building a competent and stable personnel structure in public administration, which is our imperative if we know that administrative capacities are one of the important criteria for assessing the readiness of our country to become a member of the European Union”, Martinović has concluded and invited the students to participate in this year’s Fair and choose an internship in public administration.

The Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to the Republic of Serbia, Plamena Halacheva, had stressed that it is necessary to continue with investments into the quality and capacities of public administration, so that it would be agile enough to adapt and become future-proof. According to her, the ability to reflect today’s needs and anticipate tomorrow’s needs must become a permanent feature of the public sector, while the ideas and skills of young people, as she has stated, can be a positive force for solving the numerous challenges which lie ahead.

“This time around, 800 of you will have the opportunity to carry out professional practice in public administration and thus open up new career opportunities, not only in the public administration of Serbia, but hopefully also in the public administration of the EU following Serbia’s accession,” Halacheva has said.

After the solemn opening of the Fair, the Cooperation Programme regarding the provision of support to higher education institutions in the educational process for 2022/2023 was signed with representatives of five state universities in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Kragujevac, Niš and Novi Pazar.

The second Student Professional Practice in Public Administration Fair is organized by the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government, with the support of the EU project “Public Administration Reform Visibility and Communication”.
