CONTINUATION OF COOPERATION BETWEEN MDULS AND UNOPS ON IMPROVING THE DEVELOPMENT OF LSUS

The Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government, Aleksandar Martinović, PhD, has met today with the UNOPS Serbia Multi-Country Office Director, Michela Telatin, with whom he discussed the continued cooperation and further support of UNOPS to the Ministry for the implementation of future activities.

The minister was introduced to the new programme “PRO – Local Governance for People and Nature”, which has as its main goals the further building of capacities for the application of good governance at the local level, improvement of social inclusion and environmental protection.

Martinović has explained that the intention of the President of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, and of the Government of the Republic of Serbia is to improve the quality of life in underdeveloped municipalities by implementing the policy of balanced regional development, so that citizens can stay in their hometowns and build their life and family there. In this sense, the minister has pointed out that, in the coming period, it shall be necessary to work on attracting direct foreign investments in smaller municipalities, especially in the southern region of Serbia.

The further directions for the development of eGovernment and the establishment of electronic services have also been discussed at the meeting, as well as the encouraging of inter-municipal cooperation, which shall also result in raising the standard of living in cities and municipalities throughout Serbia.

Evaluating the cooperation between the Ministry and UNOPS so far as extremely successful, the interlocutors have expressed their belief that future joint activities shall yield good results, to the benefit of all citizens of the Republic of Serbia.
