CONSULTATIONS WITH MEMBERS OF COUNCIL OF EUROPE VENICE COMMISSION ON DRAFT LAW ON REFERENDUM AND PEOPLE’S INITIATIVE

Today, representatives of the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government and representatives of the Ministry of Justice held a meeting with the members of the Council of Europe Venice Commission, working on the preparation of the draft Opinion on the Draft Law on the Referendum and the People’s Initiative. The meeting was chaired by the State Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government, Maja Mačužić Puzić.

During the online meeting with the Venice Commission members, the representatives of the two ministries presented and explained individual provisions of the Draft Law, highlighting the key novelties to the attendees.

Additionally, they provided the explanation of elements and reasons for the adoption of new legal solution that would contribute to raising the quality of citizens’ rights relating to referendums and people’s initiatives and make them more accessible to citizens.

After obtaining the opinion of the Venice Commission, the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government will proceed with the adoption of the new law, that will be harmonized with the EU standards.
